About Tokyo Kasumi:
"Tokyo Kasumi" is a collaboration art + fragrance project between Perfumer Ko and Artist Erica Ward. Perfumer Ko crafted four incense fragrances based on the four seasons in Tokyo and Ward was inspired by these fragrances to created the illustrations for this series. Each illustration combines seasonal imagery with slices of Tokyo urban scenes. “Kasumi,” which means “mist” in Japanese, is a motif that appears in classical Japanese painting. The flat, cloud-like pattern is often white or gold and the kasumi shapes create visual breaks between story scenes on rolling scrolls, or serve as dividers between foregrounds and backgrounds in paintings with flat perspective. In the paintings for Tokyo Kasumi, we drift between seasons and scenes as a kasumi clouds blend together with architectural and floral visuals while also representing the swirling smoke of fragrant incense.
