The KuraCats series welcomes you to the world of Japanese sake brewing with illustrations of hardworking "craftscats" demonstrating each stage of the brewing process.

This postcard set includes all six illustrations in the KuraCats series:
"Steaming the Rice": Tabby craftscat, Jun, is already working hard at 4:30am to steam the rice for sake
"Sprinkling the Koji": Ginger and white craftscat, Gin, is a master of koji making. He is seen delicately shaking the koji-kin from his tin, back and forth, up and down along the table over the steamed rice.
"Watching over the Moroni": Black and white crafts cat, Dai, patiently watches over the Shubo and Moromi bubbles as they fizz and pop, taking good care to ensure the aromas are always spot on.
"Hanging the Sugiyama": The overseer instructs a young craftscat how to position the fresh Sugiyama ball, made of green pine needles. When the sugidama turns to brown, it means the sake is ready for release!
"Presenting the Season's Sake": After a season of preparation, the brewery master, the Toji, proudly shows off a bottle of the season's newly bottled sake.
"Off for Delivery": Two craftscats are loading a retro three-wheeled truck with the season's fresh sake, which is now ready to be delivered!

For this series I wanted to keep the cats closer realism rather than characatures — I love imagining real cats performing the tasks of sake brewing, and I feel that cat lovers will enjoy this touch as well. The backgrounds were inspired by a trip to a real sake brewery, which adds reality to the world of KuraCats, and hopefully invites viewers to emerse themselves in the scenes.
